RED WHINE

“Please do not use RED in your company name or in your product name.

Imagine using Apple, Arri, Panavision or Sony… same thing.

Jim”

Jim and red camera are at it again

funny I cant find just RED in his TM’s.
But I do see a dead “Red apple” TM that they(RED) tried to get…funny…

I think it is only fair to speak clearly about our current situation… which is not good.

1. We had taken payment from customers the past month as production ramped up and we anticipated that most of our production problems were solved.

2. At NAB, a very large number of reservation holders, that had previously passed on taking their cameras, stepped up ready to go.

3. At the same time, we had an issue with a supplier. That put us back. And we had collected money from customers and have kept them waiting while we quickly dig out of this hole. We applaud our customer’s patience (for the most part) through this.

4. Today, we had more bad news. Upon inspection of the newest batch of sensors… we have a significant number of rejects for bad cover glass. Just when we thought nothing more could go wrong… it did. We are scrambling to speed up sensor production and fix the cover glass issue, but we will NOT ever send out cameras with sensor issues of any kind.

5. So here we are. Customers sent money in for their cameras on our request. While we fully believed we would ship their cameras, we are now in a bad place. I am prepared to refund the money to every customer until we catch up and have their camera in hand and boxed for shipment. We have not stopped production, but the current cover glass issue has severally (and temporarily) slowed production at the worst possible time.

We will contact all those that have paid in full to see if they prefer to have the money in their possession until this drama ends.

We established an open policy early in the game. Now is not the time to change that. We tell the good news and the bad news. It is what it is.

We are listening carefully to your comments and suggestions and will do whatever we can that is in the best interests of our customers.

As with every obstacle that has come before us… we will get past it. The only damage to this program has come in the form of “time lost”. I wish we could make the time up… we are trying.

Jim

New beta builds for NEO, Aspect & Prospect. IN THE WILD

April 23rd, 2008

You Saw it at NAB 08, now here it is:

DVINFO POST <<<< (LINKS TO BETA DOWNLOADS )

Here are the new 3.3 beta version of all our products. Prospect 4K 3.3 was used extensively at NAB and it held up well.

Changes:

For Prospect 2K & 4K and NEO 4K only
• SetActiveMetadata utility replaces the old RAW control scripts for disabling the 3D LUTs.
• CineForm RAW now has a separate color database (2K and 4K only,) controlled using SetActiveMetadata. There color databases are enter-changeable to allow multiple color profiles between projects. They may also be export and moved between PCs (and soon Macs.)
• The File Metadata RAW controls now support Pick White style white balancing.
• Look compiler, 3D LUT exporter under export Movie (32-bit filters stacks only.)

For Prospect HD/2K/HD
• Support for 444 exports in BGRA 32-bit float, for SA Color Finesse compatibility under Premiere. Upgraded Dissolve, and flips to use RGB 32-bit float for Color Finesse.
• Add a preview indicator for 32-bit float, vs 16-bit or 16-bit filter stacks.
• Fixed non-square pixel exports from Prospect HD/2K/4K.

For Aspect HD & Prospect HD/2K/HD
• Added a switch in the AVI/MOV export movie other to enable threading. Due to Premiere’s low memory issues, this disabled by default, but should accelerate HD exports for simple projects.
• Scrubbing should be a little faster

For everything
• CFRepair utility now shipped as standard. Primary for repairing files used in live capture, and a power outage or crash left an incomplete AVI.
• HDLink has improved support for AVCHD support, looking for common third party components like the Haali Media Splitter and the CoreAVC decoder, fixing issue where there where too many AVCHD components installed. More information here : http://www.cineform.com/products/Tec…Conversion.htm
• Many internal upgrades.

If there are no serious bug reports, these will become our release versions soon.

Scarlet Indie, GO THERE..

April 23rd, 2008

We needed a NON RED filtered site to discuss REDS new Scarlet.
Low and behold Addison Brock III has made it for us.
scarletindie.com

Now you’re thinking, “WTF, doesn’t SalaTar hate RED?”
No I don’t.
I hate the way they control and do things at times.
You can’t look at Scarlet specs and price and ignore it.

Long Month,Short Post

April 6th, 2008

Been very busy. Sorry.
Got a bunch of new toys this month, one of my favorites (short my new 300, Hemi) of the weekend was a Canon 5-D with a Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro with the one to one adaptor.
I got the 5-D bundled with the 24/105 mm, which came off as soon as I saw the macro Glass.
Just scooting around in my yard learning to use the camera (who reads manuals) I got a few shots I liked.

RED Abuser (reduser.net)
Things like this boggle my mind.

OK lets see.
CineForm has ties to: (just a basic list)
SI 2K
Wafian
P+S Technik
Weisscam
Iridas
NorPix
AltaSens
Not to mention that R3d2DPX from CineForm worked out the gate in 2 weeks, at 10x speed, with out GPU issues.(you cant even say RedCine works)
Dig in news, and Sony or Adobe, MS, news you may find CineForm too.
Seems to me that CineForm and its “gang” are not sleeping.

Red One Camera, RedCine, More Bugs for Windows users

February 27th, 2008

RedOne Camera, RedCine, More Bugs for Windows users.
The latest from RED is RedCine build 90 (v1.04), based on Assimilate Scratch’s API, falls dreadfully in the realm of “Why did they release this?”
I said at one time a Red would cost $17,500 for body and $100 g for a workflow.

Seems I wasn’t to far off.

Camera package 26g (usable)
Scratch box Windows. 45 to 50 g
Mac box close to 16 g
Software for Mac. 2g
Array and fiber (who knows seems apple has some issues with xsan)
